A company that offers warehousing, sorting, assembly and other services for domestic and international manufacturers is moving into the recently opened Thorold Multimodal Hub.
Tora Inc. will take up 60,000 square feet of warehouse space in the 80-hectare multimodal industrial complex managed by the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority, or HOPA, on the east side of the Welland Canal in Thorold.
The hub has 500,000 square feet of indoor warehouse space and marine, rail and highway access.
It’s the first step in a plan to create a corridor of multimodal industrial hubs — to be called Niagara Ports — along the Welland Canal from Thorold south through Welland and to Port Colborne.
A release from HOPA said the move will connect Tora Inc. with customers in North America and globally.
“This expansion is an important next step in our business growth. From this new facility we are better able to provide our growing customer base with a wider range of services,” said Tora’s general manager and partner Scott DeMont, in the release.
HOPA commercial vice-president Jeremy Dunn said Tora Inc.’s business is a growing success story in Niagara.
“We are delighted to be able to offer the facilities and transportation connections to help the company thrive,” said Dunn.
“We’re proud to support Ontario manufacturing; providing the industrial space and transportation connections to attract new investment, create jobs, and help companies compete.”
Thorold Mayor Terry Ugulini said his city is positioned to be the engine of a new manufacturing era in Niagara and a hub for transportation and logistics.
“This investment by Tora is a testament to that. The efficient movement of goods has never been more important to domestic and global supply chains,” he said.
While Tora moves into the hub, HOPA and Brock University recently announced a new collaboration.
The two will work together to provide experiential learning opportunities, including co-op placements, and to pursue research collaborations that support marine and industry needs.
