Economic Impact of Agriculture Continues to Grow in Niagara

It’s no secret that agriculture has a significant impact on Niagara’s economy. What the sector looks like, and how that impact has changed is the focus of the Niagara Agriculture Profile and the Niagara Agriculture Economic Impact reports.Using data from the Statistics Canada 2016 Census of Agriculture, the reports show how the region has continued to diversify, produce higher value agricultural outputs, and access new market opportunities.

Agriculture employs close to 20,000 people in Niagara, and represents a GDP impact of $1.41 billion to the economy. The region also represents 42.8% of the gross farm receipts in the Golden Horseshoe region. On average, Niagara farms are producing higher value goods compared to the rest of Ontario.
