Social gatherings are emerging as the focal point for the spread of the novel coronavirus in Niagara, said the region’s acting medical officer of health.
Dr. Mustafa Hirji said Monday while health-care facilities, particularly long-term-care homes, were once where most local cases were being generated, that is no longer the case.
Community outbreaks in non-medical facilities, often fuelled by social gatherings big and small, are now where many local cases are spawned.
The shift is, in part, the expected result of getting most long-term-care home outbreaks under control and the increased economic and community activity permitted under Ontario’s current economic reopening phase.
“It can be a situation where someone wants to go to a social gathering, is ignoring minor symptoms, and spreading the virus,” Hirji said.
