General Electric
At more than 450,000 square feet, it will be the largest industrial building in Welland and second only to the entire Seaway Mall in size and the 150 jobs the new General Electric plant will create are likely just the beginning when it begins operations. Construction is expected to begin before the end of this summer on 75 acres of land on the west side of Highway 140, between Silverthorn Street and Buchner Road, encompassing the entire city-owned Harry Diffin Industrial Park. The new facility is expected to be operational by early 2018.GE had initially estimated the cost of the plant at US$265-million. Ms. Warburton said the company won't have final cost estimates for several months.

GM workers ratify contract

September 25, 2016 - Unifor members working at General Motors facilities in St. Catharines, Oshawa and Woodstock have ratified an agreement that secures investment in all three communities, converts 700 precarious jobs and offers wage improvements. “The gains made in this agreement are historic and more than what has been achieved in the past 10 years,” said Unifor national president Jerry Dias. “Unifor has shown what is possible when workers have a union, and a united bargaining committee to speak on their behalf.”

Foreign Trade Zone
The government of Canada has announced the designation of the Niagara Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) Point, serving the region’s 12 municipalities from east of Hamilton to the United States border. The Point is meant to serve as a one-stop shop for businesses to access information on Canada’s FTZ policies and programs. This is the first FTZ Point established inOntario.

Niagara Region Wind Farm
December 2015 - A 230 MW Class 4 wind power project in and across the Regional municipality of Niagara, the Township of west Lincoln, the Town of Waintfleet and Haldimand County The project will source locally $130 million in infrastructure, share their revenue with the local community, increase tax revenue for local communities by over 5 million and create  clean source of energy.

Niagara College and Ontario Centres of Excellence
Niagara College will offer vouchers to 20 companies to support projects that will generate new market opportunities. Eight vouchers are available for companies to access Technology Adoption projects, which will focus on technology development and testing/validation activities to support innovation. The remaining 12 vouchers will focus on e-business solutions such as website development, online sales process, digital and social media and customer relationship management.

Niagara College Projects

Canadian Food and Wine Institute - The expansion of the Canadian Food and Wine Institute at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus supports Niagara College's position as Canada's premier college for food and fermentation sciences and will help meet growing demand for its culinary, wine and brewery programs. The 13,000 square-foot one-floor addition will be constructed on the east side of the existing CFWI building and will include an expanded baking and pastry lab, quantitative lab, qualitative lab and central stores. Renovations to the existing stores area will complete a culinary, butchery and charcuterie lab. Construction began in October, 2015 and completion is scheduled for January, 2017.

Advanced Manufacturing Centre - The 15,000 square-foot Walker Advanced Manufacturing Centre will significantly enhance Niagara College's capacity for applied research projects. The ground floor will feature specialized labs with 3D printers, scanners, and other equipment along with office space for student and staff scientists and researchers. The top floor will house Niagara College Research and Innovation offices and space for ncTakeOff - the college's entrepreneurship hub. Research and Innovation's digital media and web solutions group will also be on the second floor along with meeting and conference space. The Centre is named in recognition of a $1.2 million contribution from Niagara's Walker family and its company, Walker Industries Holdings Limited. The contribution is the largest corporate donation in Niagara College history.Work began on the facility in May, 2015 and completion is scheduled for spring 2016.

Athletic Facility - Athletic Facility: Currently in the design phase, this 20,000 square-foot expansion allows for a possible future expansion of an additional two floors. The project includes an expansion to the east side of the campus replacing the existing facility, with an upgraded, larger fitness centre with change rooms, an exercise studio, offices, reception and six new 40-seat classrooms. Construction projection: May 2016 - October 2017.

Recreation and Fitness Addition - Recreation and fitness addition: Currently in the design phase, this 10,300 square-foot addition to the north side of the Athletic Centre will provide a new academic lab with longer-term flexibility as a second gymnasium.

Student Commons - Student commons: Currently in the design phase, this 37,000 square-foot expansion to the north-end of the Simcoe Building will include a student activity centre, 600-seat cafeteria (including Tim Hortons and several other outlets like Subway), kitchen and servery. The project will also include an expansion of the existing prayer room. Two-storey renovations to the north end of the Simcoe Building will accommodate justice studies programs, demonstration labs and four classrooms proposed. Construction projection: May 2016 - August 2017.

Electric Vehicle Charging pilot project with Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro and TechMahindra

July 10, 2015 - TechMahindra, a digital transformation, consulting and business re-engineering firm with 92,000+ professionals serving 632 global customers, is partnering with Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro and San Diego Gas & Electric to demonstrate the effects of electric vehicle charging on transformers by creating a real time transformer monitoring and analytics solution. This is a $1.4 million project funded by the Ontario Ministry of Energy.
