The COVID-19 pandemic forced workplaces across Niagara to shut down for months if they weren’t deemed essential, which meant town halls and city halls across the region closed their doors to the public for an extended period.
But as disruptive as that was, it forced municipal staff and politicians to explore new ways of continuing services while maintaining the physical distancing needed to slow down the spread of the virus.
At Wainfleet’s town hall, the township’s building department has taken what it says is a major step forward toward an all-digital process for applying for and issuing permits and arranging inspections, known as Cloudpermit.
Lee Gudgeon, manager of human resources and protective services for the township, said Wainfleet’s protective services department – comprised of building and bylaw enforcement – has been evolving since its inception in 2018 to make operations more efficient and customer-friendly.
