The federal government has announced $30 million in support of the Canadian Food Innovators (CFI) network via Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada. This announcement is being heralded locally as a positive step towards helping Niagara food and beverage processors remain competitive while developing new products and the technology associated.
Food processing innovation centres across Canada have tended to work independently from one another, so the main project for the next two years will be to build a stronger network between them. The first step is to build a searchable database of partners and innovators, such as the Canadian Food and Wine Institute Innovation Centre (CFWIIC), as they hope to break some of the barriers that have historically blocked the industry and research centres from working together.
