State-of-the-art equipment recently added to the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines is allowing more patients to receive the care they need in Niagara.
Niagara Health cardiologists began using a new angiography suite last week in its heart investigation unit, providing minimally invasive diagnostic cardiac catheterization procedures, as well as percutaneous coronary interventions to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease, the hospital system said in a media release.
It is an “important investment in cardiac care for Niagara,” said Matthew Baronaitis, Niagara Health’s clinical manager of cardiology.
“It gives our team advanced tools to perform complex procedures efficiently and supports our goal of providing more specialized care close to home,” he said in a media release.
Niagara cardiologists performed about 2,100 intervention procedures last year, working in partnership with Hamilton Health Sciences. The new technology — provided through funding from the Niagara Health Foundation — will allow doctors to offer a broader range of procedures in the region, rather than travelling to out-of-region hospitals.
The new state-of-the-art angiography suite at Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines opened to patients on July 15.
The suite is equipped with an X-ray system, providing physicians with high-quality, real-time images to precisely guide them while working on patients, as well as an intravascular ultrasound system that uses a miniature ultrasound catheter to create detailed images from inside a coronary artery.
Baronaitis said it gives cardiologists “another level of detail when assessing coronary disease and planning treatment.
“Combined with the new imaging system, it strengthens our ability to provide precise, evidence-based care and expands the range of complex procedures we can perform here in Niagara,” he added.
